Learning About Performing Arts

Hello, my name is Krissy Fersch. I would like to welcome you to my site about performing arts. Kids and adults alike can benefit from participating in performing arts. This activity enriches the imagination and builds social skills. Participants take on the role of a character they must bring to life on stage. While practicing and performing, performing arts enthusiasts learn how to present themselves in an amazing way. I will use this site to explore all of these benefits and more. I hope you will follow along and learn about the ways performing arts can improve your life. Thank you for visiting. I hope to see you again soon.

Is your young child ready to start ballet dance classes? Your preschooler wants to dance. But you're not sure if they're old enough or developmentally ready for ballet dance lessons. Take a look at what parents need to know about ballet classes for children, age, and different dance options.

Is There A Minimum Age To Start Dance Classes?

The answer to this question depends on the ballet program and the school's requirements. Some schools offer developmental, pre-ballet, or creative movement for very young children—while others only have classes for older students. If you're not sure whether a program has age-related requirements or if your child meets the school's recommended age guidelines, ask the director or an admissions staff member for more information.

Can A Child Who Acts Older Than Their Age Start Sooner?

Do you feel that your child is mature or advanced for their age? It's possible that your younger preschooler has cognitive or motor skills that are well beyond the expected milestones for their chronological age. But this doesn't necessarily mean they should trend a class with children who are two, three, or more years older.

A physically advanced child may have exceptional motor skills. Even though this child could master the movements in a ballet class for older children, they may not have the attention span, independence/self-care, social skills, or emotional abilities to handle an advanced dance program. Before you jump your younger child ahead to a class created for significantly older students, talk to the school's staff about finding the best overall fit.

Is There A Right or Wrong Age To Start Dance Classes?

Yes—and no. Dance comes naturally to some children. A toddler who whirls, jumps, and seems to glide with ease may enjoy a ballet class. But again, this doesn't necessarily mean they're ready to become a serious student.

Think about your child as a whole person and not just as a dancer. By the upper preschool years (ages four and five) many children have the cognitive and emotional abilities to focus on a dance class and follow directions. They also have the receptive language skills to understand a teacher's instructions.

Along with cognitive, emotional, and language development, by age five many children have the physical skills necessary to learn more than the basics. This means your older preschooler or kindergartner could potentially participate in a class that goes beyond creative movement or pre-ballet skill development.
