You might be brand new to the world of dance, or you might have taken a few dance classes before. There are professional dancers who continuously take dance classes to keep their skills sharp and even learn new techniques.

If you are considering taking a dance class, you might be wondering what type of class you should take? It will really depend on what you want to learn and what your physical abilities are. Here are some different types of dances and what it will take to succeed in them to help you decide which style is right for you.

Ballet Classes

Ballet classes are typically one of the first dance classes many professional dancers learn. It requires a lot of balance and coordination as well as strength. Ballet can teach you how to move with precise movements as well as with grace and fluidity. Ballet is both a single dancer type of class as well as a group style.

In order to succeed in ballet, you will need to have strong legs, ankles, and toes, capable of holding you up on pointe. You will need to be flexible and be able to stretch in order to make the clean lines and graceful moves of ballet dances.

Jazz Classes

Another popular type of dance class is jazz. Jazz is a high-energy type of dance that requires the dancer to have stamina and endurance. There is a lot of leaps, turns, and quick footwork in jazz. Jazz also teaches you how to improvise and make up your own steps and movements. In fact, much of jazz is the dancer's own imagination and innovation to create their own dance steps and combination of steps.

Jazz dance classes require the dancer to have the ability to dance at a high-energy level and be creative. Jazz is usually a dance performed alone but sometimes group dances and duets are done as well.

Hip-Hop Classes

One of the more recent styles of dance classes you can take is hip-hop. The dance style came from the culture and music of the same name and features high-energy dance moves that are more jerky in nature than jazz. Hip-Hop requires the dancer to be imaginative and be able to improvise their own dance moves or combine multiple moves into a dance routine.

Hip-hop requires a good sense of rhythm and timing as well as a lot of endurance and energy. You also need the ability, strength, and flexibility to complete many of the more complex moves.
